Date Visited: October 4 2014
Address: 8269 Oak St Vancouver, BC
Type of Restaurant: Japanese, Sushi, Bento Box
Price Range: $
Ambiance (out of five)/Setting/Design/service: 4/5 – Service was kind of slow, the restaurant is small but quaint
Recommended: Bento Box, Combos
Overall: 7/10
(1-4: will never come back, 5: pass (I’m okay with a tinier morsel), 6: acceptable, 7: okay, 8: good, 9: Wow! Please enlarge my morsel. 10: Perfection. I could eat a morsel of this every day!)
Will come back? For a cheap and big meal maybe
What I ate:
Tempura Don (2 shrimp and 3 veggies) miso soup, house salad, corn cream croquette included
  • Tempura – 8/10
    • Nice and crunchy, veggies and shrimp did not soak up too much oil flavour
    • Even if dipped into sauce it didn’t go soggy
  • Corn Cream Croquette – 7/10
    • I was looking forward to this one because I’d heard many good comments about it
    • But unfortunately it didn’t live up to my expectations. I adore corn and this definitely did not contain enough corn
    • The corn to potato ratio was off, too much potato to be called a CORN croquette
    • Also the sauce was also slightly over powering and the sweetness of the corn didn’t come through
    • But it was fried to a nice and crispy perfection
  • In total I would give this a 7/10 the amount of rice was too much for the tempura provided and there was no sauce to accompany it to make the rice less dry
Bento Box B – Salmon, tuna, tai and ebi sushi, California roll, Garden salad, beef teriyaki on rice, chicken karaage
  • Salmon, tuna, tai and ebi sushi – 7/10
    • Lacked freshness
    • The rice had a nice chew to it and it held together quite nicely
  • California roll – 7/10
    • The California roll was just the perfect size
    • I would have preferred more avocado in it
  • The beef teriyaki on rice – 6.5/10
    • The beef teriyaki was mostly onion and mushrooms not much beef
    • It had a bit too much teriyaki sauce overpowering the original beef and mushroom flavour but luckily the onions gave it a bit of sweetness
  • Chicken karaage – 7/10
    • It was fried nicely and was crispy
    • But it was more like chicken wings and not like chicken karaage the outer crust was different than chicken karaage
Things to Improve on: The tempera don needs a sauce to add to it texture wise. The beef teriyaki could use less teriyaki sauce. The chicken karaage would be better if they used a different cut of chicken and if they had marinated it, it would have given the chicken more flavour and it would be juicer
Summary: Standard food, big portions, not too expensive.
