Black and Blue – The Roof

Date Visited: November 25 2015
Address: 1032 Alberni Street Vancouver, BC V6E1A3
Website: http://www.glowbalgroup.com/blackblue/
Type of Restaurant: Steakhouse, seafood, cocktail hour, happy hour
Price Range: $$$$
Ambiance (out of five)/Setting/Design/service:
4/5 – Not too stuffy, the setting was comfortable and relaxed, the service was friendly and attentive
Overall: 7/10
(1-4: will never come back, 5: pass (I’m okay with a tinier morsel), 6: acceptable, 7: okay, 8: good, 9: Wow! Please enlarge my morsel. 10: Perfection. I could eat a morsel of this every day!)
Will come back? Maybe
Disappointingly, we were seated on The Roof for cocktail hour and I did not realize till later that they did not have what I wanted on their cocktail hour menu. I wanted to try their wagyu beef with the 50% off but unfortunately they only served it downstairs
What I ate:
20141125_165150
(Sorry for the terrible quality picture)
Virgin Victoria Secret Drink
  • 6.5/10
  • Very strong lime and sour flavour
  • I liked the addition of pepper on top but overall I only got a sour flavour from it
Calamari
  • 6.5/10
  • Not crunchy AT ALL, I contemplated on whether or not I should send it back but decided against it
  • The seafood itself luckily didn’t taste too chewy or overcooked
  • But the batter was practically falling off
  • The sauce that accompanied it was addicting though – kind of smoky (like BBQ sauce), with a combination of tartar sauce
Phyllo Prawns
  • 7/10
  • Very big prawns, good portions
  • The phyllo surrounding it was nice and crunchy
  • But unfortunately lacked salt
  • The sauce was unable to cover the surface of the prawn which made it taste bland
  • Luckily the prawns weren’t over cooked
Mac & Cheese
  • 7/10
  • Good amount of cheese
  • Nicely fried, bread coating was crunchy
  • The pasta was unfortunately over cooked and was not al dente
Wagyu 6oz
  • 8/10
  • Cooked to a medium
  • The marbling was amazing
  • The fat melted in your mouth
  • With a few bites it could just disappear from your tongue
  • Nice and strong beefy flavour
  • The potatoes that accompanied it lacked flavour and were over cooked (feel apart easily – couldn’t poke it)
Things to Improve on: Overall flavours, the frying of the calamari, cooking of the pasta, improving the potato sides for the wagyu
Summary: Definitely worth it for Cocktail hour, but the Wagyu was regular priced and I didn’t think the flavour justified the price. The items were just so-so (mediocre) so I wouldn’t come back to Black and Blue again.
