Chez Meme Baguette Bistro

Date Visited: December 13 2014
Address: 4016 Hastings St Burnaby, BC
Type of Restaurant: French, Breakfast, Bistro, Bread, Pastries
Price Range: $$
Ambiance (out of five)/Setting/Design/service: 4/5 – service was really good, design was old school (not many tables)
Overall: 7/10
(1-4: will never come back, 5: pass (I’m okay with a tinier morsel), 6: acceptable, 7: okay, 8: good, 9: Wow! Please enlarge my morsel. 10: Perfection. I could eat a morsel of this every day!)
Will come back? Probably not – the food wasn’t that memorable and it’s far
What I ate:
Plain croissant served with jam and butter
  • 6/10
  • The croissant lacked butteriness and flakiness
  • But it was fairly big for a croissant though
Jambon-Bie (Black Forest Ham, Brie Cheese et Moutarde de Dijon
  • 7.5/10
  • The bread is really the star of this sandwich – it’s chewy yet soft on the inside and the outside provides a nice crunch
  • There was a good amount of brie cheese and the Dijon mustard was able to cut through the richness of the cheese
  • The black forest ham was nothing special – added a nice saltiness to it
  • The fries were crispy but tasted like they came out of a bag, it also had a slight oily flavour to them
Jarret (Lamb Shanks, roasted garlic jam and grainy Dijon)
  • 7/10
  • The lamb was too salty but luckily had a strong lamb flavour which I enjoyed
  • It was also quite juicy and the bread would soak up the juice which was nice
  • I wish there was more garlic jam and Dijon to offset the saltiness of the sandwich it also needed something sweet for balance
  • The tomato soup was very refreshing and tasted healthy
Onion Soup (onion soup – beef stock, gratin with baguette and Swiss cheese)
  • 6.5/10
  • The onion soup was a disappointment – I had high hopes for this soup but it let me down
  • The beef stock was over powering and lacked depth
  • The baguette was soaked in the unpleasant stock
  • But I really enjoyed the Swiss cheese oozing on top
  • I would have preferred more onions in my soup
Things to Improve on: Balance of flavours
Summary: This bistro let me down. I had high expectations after hearing all the great things. Maybe I had come on an off day. The portion of the food is great but balancing some of the flavours would have improved some of the dishes immensely
