(CLOSED) Good Wolfe Kitchen and Bar

Date Visited: December 11 2014
Address: 1043 Mainland St  Vancouver, BC
Website: http://www.goodwolfe.ca/
Type of Restaurant: European, Seafood, Wine bar
Price Range: $$$
Ambiance (out of five)/Setting/Design/service: 4/5 – service was attentive, design was rustic, country style yet with elements of modernity
Overall: 7/10
(1-4: will never come back, 5: pass (I’m okay with a tinier morsel), 6: acceptable, 7: okay, 8: good, 9: Wow! Please enlarge my morsel. 10: Perfection. I could eat a morsel of this every day!)
Will come back? For happy hour yes – for their regular menu – no
What I ate:
1lb mussels & fries – choice of lemongrass, laksa or southwest tomato, focaccia bread
  • 7.5/10
  • We didn’t get to choose which one I think we got either lemongrass or laksa
  • The broth was not very strong and lacked depth – could definitely taste coconut and a little bit of spice – would have preferred more spice
  • The mussels were huge and there were a lot of them (I really can’t stress how big them were like one of them was the size of a 4 year olds fist)
  • The mussels were plump and cooked perfectly
  • The focaccia bread was… interesting? – It felt dense and not bread like so it did not soak up the broth well (very doughy)
  • The fries were okay – would have preferred crunchier fries
Sablefish – fish-maple soy sauce, buckwheat soba noodles, gai lan
  • 8/10
  • The sablefish was nicely cooked – buttery and melted in the mouth
  • The flavours of this was not bad and very Asian but it was a bit too sweet for my liking
  • The buckwheat soba noodles were very enjoyable and went with the dish well – a touch more of sesame oil would have brought out the essence of the dish more
Lamb Rack – mashed potatoes, winter vegetables, natural jus
  • 7/10
  • The lamb was cooked nicely
  • But the pistachio crust got soggy really quickly and it lost its crunchiness
  • The mashed potatoes were not as smooth and creamy as I would have wanted
  • The winter vegetables were a tad overcooked
  • The natural jus didn’t add much flavour to the entire dish – would have preferred if it was thicker and had bolder flavours
Black Cherry Cap
  • 6.5/10
  • The black cherry was quite strong
  • There wasn’t much alcohol in this which is good but the bitterness of the black cherry and the alcohol together was too strong
Things to Improve on: Using bolder flavours
Summary: The atmosphere at this restaurant is relaxed. The portions of the appetizers are quite large and the portions of the entrees were spot on. The flavours are nothing special but for happy hour I thought it was worth it. The happy hour deal is 50% off everything off the menu. Good Wolfe Kitchen & Bar on Urbanspoon
