What I ate:
First dine out of the year and I wanted a strong start so I decided on Yew Seafood and Bar. I had looked at the menu beforehand and it looked decent, the flavours were interesting. Unfortunately I was let down.
Cheddar Scones and Salmon Scones (Complimentary)
  • 8/10
  • Best dish of the night
  • Scones were slightly warm and had some decent flavours
  • The scones were fluffy and buttery
  • But a tad too much rising agent
Pacific ocean – 2015 Oceanwise Chowder Chowdown Champion – smoked black cod Chowder Maple candied sablefish, Okanagan Apple Butter
  • 5/10
  • Could not finish this soup
  • I had high hopes for this chowder champion but it definitely disappointed. It may be one of the worst chowders I’ve ever had.
  • It was overly sweet, the maple candied sablefish did not work well with the overall soup
  • It was sweet to the point where I felt like I was already eating dessert
  • Luckily I could taste the smoked flavour from the smoked black cod but the sweetness of the overall dish totally ruined the dish for me.
  • The texture of the chowder could have also been thicker and creamier
Pacific Ocean – White Miso Baked Ling Cod Blood Orange, Vanilla and Parsnips
  • 6.5/10
  • This ling cod was slightly overcooked (could have been taken out of the oven a little earlier and it would have been perfectly cooked)
  • The blood orange glaze on the top made this dish too sweet
  • The parsnips was a nice creamy component
  • I wish there was another crunchy salty component to it to balance out the sweetness
Cider Glazed Black Pig – Crispy Belly and Loin, Cloudberry Relish, Brown Butter Honey
  • 6/10
  • The crispy belly tasted a bit like KFC which was strange
  • Both the crispy belly and loin were tough and hard to cut through
  • It also lacked flavour, a pinch of salt on the pork loin would have brought out the natural flavour of the pork better
  • The brown butter honey was useless without the extra pinch of salt on the plate
  • The vegetables on the bottom did add a nice crunch
  • I would have wanted more starchy components on the plate to go with the pork
Whole Roasted Quail – Baked Apple Pulp, Wild Rice Gnocchi, Onion Jam, Caramelized Black Pepper
  • 6.5/10
  • This again was on the sweeter side
  • The onion jam would have been enough of a sweet component but around the plate there was an additional sauce (the baked apple pulp I’m assuming) that tasted somewhat like an apple strudel
  • The quail was also a little too tough and it would have been better if the quail had been seared on top for a crunchy finish
  • The fresh apple on top was a nice cleanser
  • The gnocchi was okay but if the quail had been juicier and better executed I might have wanted some other starch component to soak up the flavour
  • The corn and wild rice was also another sweet component to the dish which I felt was unnecessary and masked the flavours of the quail
Chocolate Ganache Cake, Espresso Marshmallow, Almond Brittle Ice Cream
  • 6.75/10
  • The chocolate ganache cake was luckily not too sweet but there was nothing memorable about it. It tasted more like a mousse than a cake
  • The piece of almond brittle was not big enough to give the entire dish a crunchy component
‘Wild Forest’ Pavlova – Cremeux, Candied Hazelnut, Cinnamon Crunch
  • 7/10
  • The cremeux was extremely addicting – soft, yet not too sweet, creamy and great texture
  • The pavlova itself was baked perfectly. Inside nice and soft and chewy outside hard and crunchy (like a cloud)
  • I didn’t really care for the dried fruit on top but I did like the one that was infused with wine that fruit added a nice bitter component to the dish
  • The sponge cinnamon cake was okay, nothing special
Things to Improve on: The overall planning of each dish and the execution of the dishes. Needs to balance sweet and salty flavours
Summary: A restaurant with great atmosphere and … great atmosphere. The food was all on the sweeter side and the proteins were not well cooked. The dishes need to be better thought out.
