Phoenix Garden Chinese Restaurant 鳳凰城酒家

Date Visited: January 3 2015
Address: 2425 Nanaimo St  Vancouver, BC V5N5E5
Type of Restaurant: Chinese, dim sum, seafood
Price Range: $
Ambiance (out of five)/Setting/Design/service: 4.5/5 – service was terrific for a Chinese restaurant, the design was tacky but typical of a dim sum place
Overall: 7/10
(1-4: will never come back, 5: pass (I’m okay with a tinier morsel), 6: acceptable, 7: okay, 8: good, 9: Wow! Please enlarge my morsel. 10: Perfection. I could eat a morsel of this every day!)
Will come back? Maybe – you never know where family outing will take you
What I ate:

Steam Dace Fish Ball (sorry the picture is missing 2 balls)
  • 6/10
  • Was overly minced and lacked bounciness
  • The fish feel apart too easily
  • And the flavours were not very strong

Fish Maw Chicken
  • 6.5/10
  • One of the more flavourful dishes
  • Chicken was nicely marinated in wine

Chicken Rice
  • 6/10
  • Rice was acceptable
  • The chicken was well flavoured but was overcooked
  • Not tender or juicy enough
20150103_104709
Dried Chicken Noodle
  • 6.5/10
  • Generous amount
  • Not enough chicken, a lot of noodles
  • Not enough soy sauce and wok fire

Chicken feet with Black bean
  • 5.75/10
  • Disappointing
  • The flavours were not good at all
  • Lacked the goodness of black bean sauce
  • The chicken feet were small and badly cooked
20150103_105120
Beef tendon
  • 5.5/10
  • The beef tendon was overcooked and had a weird flavour to it (hard to explain – musky?)
  • It did have a nice stickiness to it
20150103_104224
Baked egg yolk bun
  • 7.5/10
  • The bun could have been more airy
  • The top of the bun was crunchy and could have been a bit sweeter to balance off the saltiness of the egg yolk on the inside
  • I would have preferred if there was a bit more of the egg yolky deliciousness but the runniness was good
20150103_105245
XO Sauce Daikon Cake
  • 6/10
  • Lacked XO sauce
  • Too floury and not enough Daikon
  • Not enough savoury flavour
  • Could have used more green onions
Things to Improve on: Overall flavours and cooking of the dishes
Summary: Some interesting dishes. The price is pretty cheap (especially for noodles) and portions are quite big.
