Hugos Churros was definitely the vendor I was most excited for. The pictures on Instagram and twitter looked amazing so I had to try it. When I got there that evening around 6 o’clock, there was no line for it but at around 8 there was a massive line but luckily we had already bought it by then.

I got the Churro Ice Cream Sandwich. It was definitely visually appealing but… very disappointing. The Churro itself was presented piping hot so the ice cream itself melted within 3 minutes. The churro was crunchy on the inside and coated with a good amount of sugar and cinnamon but unfortunately the inside was way too hot and uncooked. It was too doughy and wet inside to be enjoyable. If the churro sandwich was not as hot and the ice cream didn’t melt as quickly it would have been better. Also if the inside had a better consistency it would have been immensely improved.

Heritage Canadian Bakery was presenting there Cruffins tonight. It’s supposed to be a mix between a muffin and a croissant. I got the seared pork belly spiced pear chutney topped with pork cracklings cruffin and the lemon meringue cruffin.

  • I really liked the toppings on this one
  • It came warm and it was sweet, tangy and savoury
  • The saltiness and crispiness of the pork belly and the sourness of the pear chutney was really complimenting
  • The dough didn’t really remind me of a muffin but more of a croissant and dense bread. It reminded me more of a densely made croissant. It was buttery and heavy
Lemon Meringue Cruffin
  • 7.5/10
  • The lemon curd topped with (I think) a marshmallow meringue was a little on the sweeter side
  • The lemon curd on the inside was nice and tangy, not too sour so great for people who don’t like it too tangy
  • The meringue on top was a little too sweet for me but the soft and cloudlike texture provided a good contrast to the bottom cruffin (which I have talked about above)

Got the 33 Acres of Sunshine
Style: French Blanche, Colour: Hazy blonde, Alcohol: 5.0% by volume, Aroma: Fruity, orange peel, coriander, black liquorice
  • 6.5/10 (because I prefer lighter beers)
  • This was definitely one of the more bitter beers on tap that night
  • The orange peel was quite fragrant
  • There was a deep undertone of black liquorice and a hint of coriander
  • Definitely a very complex beer, but not my style

Koicha (Thick Tea): a concertrated Matcha tea with the consistency of wet paint. Just think of it as a Matcha espresso! Made with Seicho: Pinnacle Star.
  • 7/10
  • The matcha tea was very fragrant and smooth
  • The matcha flavour was deep and penetrated all areas of the flavour palate
  • My only problem was that, it being koicha a thick tea, it should be thicker than the consistency presented

Strawberry Friends Forever
  • 7.5/10
  • Very nice and bright flavour of strawberries
  • Not overly sweet, consistency was quite good
  • Tasted somewhat like strawberry shortcake
Tripped Out Tropical
  • 7.5/10
  • Tropical tripped out was another favourite among us
  • Had a mix of different fruits
Chocoholics Anonymous
  • 6/10
  • Tasted somewhat like a fudgy brownie
  • The texture of this ice cream was not very smooth, it had little bits of it
  • The coconut was pretty strong in this one
  • It tasted like dark chocolate and had a dry feeling to it
Lemonhead
  • 7/10
  • This one was somewhat confusing
  • It was not as sour as I would have liked with it being called Lemonhead
  • The lemon could have been stronger for me
  • If you eat the chocolate anonymous first and then try the lemonhead it will be more sour so for sour eaters try it that way
  • You could really taste the coconut and sweet potato in this one
  • At one point I thought I was eating coconut flavour
Overall: Interesting icecream flavours (some may be more grainy than others) and 100% vegan!

I’ve wanted to try this truck for a while but I never seem to bump into it around town. Finally fate has pulled us together and we finally got to try it!

Fliptop’s pulled pork Pandesal Sandwich
  • 8/10
  • The pulled pork was very flavourful and juicy
  • The bread held all the filling in very nicely
  • The crunch from the vegetables and the fried bits added a nice textural contrast
Overall: flavourful, looking forward to trying more

I was definitely craving pizza after seeing the pizza truck at the event. It was hard to decide on which pizza to get but finally decided on the spicy ham and pineapple pizza

Spicy ham and Pineapple Pizza
  • 5.5/10
  • Definitely a disappointing pizza
  • The pineapple juice seeped into the bottom and the entire crust became soggy which really ruined the pizza for me
  • The spicy ham was pretty spicy because of the chilli flakes
  • The dough itself was not proofed enough and it was not as airy and chewy as I would have liked
  • It was baked nicely though
Overall: Community Pizzeria à disappointing

Hawkers Event was definitely fun! A lot of the vendors were presenting exciting and innovative food and goods.
