Taboo – Happy hour

Date Visited: April 24 2015

What I ate:

Complimentary bread

  • Was nice and crunchy
  • I thought the vinegar was unnecessary, the sauce would have been enough

Kimchi and bacon aranchini balls

  • 7/10
  • Not enough kimchi
  • The aranchini balls were well made though
  • Nice and crispy outside
  • Soft and cheesy inside but just not enough kimchi and not enough smoky baconess

Jeyuk spicy pulled pork poutine

  • 6.5/10
  • Not bad – had some spiciness but could have been more firey
  • The fried were very disappointing, soggy not crunchy at all
  • The pulled pork was dry and needed more sauce
  • The cheese curds were good though

Mandu spring roll

  • 6/10
  • The spring roll sauce was weird and could have done without it
  • The filling was almost non-existent
  • The spring rolls could have been crispier

Bulgogi flatbread – bulgogi, jalapeno, yuja goat cheese

  • 6.5/10
  • Not enough bulgogi
  • The flatbread was like puff pastry from the pack
  • There was more vegetables than anything else

Tuna tartar

  • 6.5/10
  • The tuna tartar was quite sweet and bland
  • Could have added some extra flair to it like chives etc.

Spicy squid – Korean chilli and veggie stir-fry

  • 6/10
  • The veggie stir-fly had very little spicy squid
  • The flavour was just gochu jang and that’s it
  • Very watery sauce

Prawn mayo – prawn tempura with rice cracker with wasabi mayo glaze

  • 6/10
  • Not crunchy, prawn tempura got soggy
  • The rice cracker added some interesting texture but I could not taste any wasabi in the glaze which was disappointing
  • There was also too much mayo glaze making it overly sweet

Address: 1233 Hamilton Street, Metro Vancouver

Website: http://www.tabookitchen.com/

Type of Restaurant: Korean, fusion, Asian

Price Range: $$

Overall: 6.5/10

Will come back? No

Summary: Happy hour food was quite cheap and okay amount of selection. But the flavours were somewhat lacking and didn’t have enough Korean influence.
