Joe Fortes

What I ate:
Buck a Shuck Oyster (served icy cold on the half shell with classic cocktail sauce)
  • 8/10
  • No sand, no shell, no extra salty water
  • It was fresh and plump
  • I like their oysters – cheap (during happy hour) and good quality
Jumbo Tiger Prawn Cocktail (fresh horseradish, cocktail sauce)
  • 7/10
  • The prawns were quite large but I thought the quantity was a bit lacking
  • The cocktail sauce was nothing special
  • The prawns were cooked nicely, not for too long
Truffle Parmesan Fries (grana padano, herbs, sea salt)
  • 7.5/10
  • The fries were crispy on the outside and soft and potato-y on the inside which is just the way I liked it but after a while some of the chips started breaking too easily (which is why I took of an extra 0.5)
  • The truffle flavour was quite strong but only on some fries – lacked consistency
  • Could have done with more parmesan
Beef Carpaccio (grainy mustard, roasted garlic, grana padano, crispy capers)
  • 8.5/10
  • Great piece of beef, very buttery and not chewy at all
  • The crunchy capers provided some nice texture
  • The overall carpaccio was very well seasoned and it didn’t take away from the freshness of the beef itself
Mini Lobster and Shrimp Rolls (shrimp, Atlantic lobster meat, classic remoulade)
  • 7.5/10
  • I liked that the outside of the lobster shrimp rolls were toasted to allow for some extra crunch and butteriness
  • The bread used accompanied the rolls well
  • But there was definitely more shrimp than lobster which was disappointing
  • The classic remoulade was very creamy and well-seasoned
Joe’s Shrimp Ceviche (shrimp, jalapeno, avocado, tomato, corn chips)
  • 7/10
  • The shrimp ceviche tasted fresh but by the end of the meal all of the water had come out from the tomatoes
  • The jalapeno added a subtle kick which isn’t that noticeable unless you get a chunk of it
  • The avocado added a nice creaminess but it would have been better if there was more avocado
  • The shrimp was again well prepared
  • The corn chips were on the saltier side but it fared well because the ceviche was on the blander side
  • 7/10
  • The tiramisu was creamy
  • The alcohol flavour was not too strong but the taste comes after you savour it for awhile
  • It wasn’t too sweet
