I had been looking forward to going to this place for a while. I’ve seen people raving about their Hainan style chicken and rice so I had to give it a try.
The Hainan-style chicken rice was definitely a let down. The chicken portion was very small for a large. The chicken itself was very moist and well seasoned BUT the rice was a total fail. It was over cooked, mushy and lacked body to it. Sure, the main star of this dish should be the chicken, but without good rice to accompany this dish, it fails to become the best Hainan-style chicken rice in Vancouver.
I also had the noodles with dried fish on it and this dish was very interesting. I’ve never come across this dish before even when I went to Singapore last year. The noodles were very thickly cut and cooked just right. The combination of dried fish and noodles was interesting. The heat from the noodles would cook the dried fish a bit and create an interesting texture. It was savoury and crunchy and creamy from the egg all in one.
Overall: Mamalee was a bit disappointing. I’ve definitely had better Hainan-style chicken before. The food was nicely presented though and the flavours were pretty on point. But I will probably not be back any time soon. 7/10
