Daeji has many locations around town including two in Downtown and one in Burquitlam. I decided to try the Denman location since my workplace is near there.
When we initially walked in at 11:55, the restaurant was only 50% full but once it hit 12:00pm the people started piling in and it was full within 5 minutes. There were groups of people waiting outside.
We ordered the kimchi fried rice and it was not bad. They used aged kimchi which really helped add an additional level of flavour which I really enjoyed. The rice stuck together a little too much for me. There was a good amount of sesame oil that I always look for in a kimchi fried rice. Overall, I thought the ratio of kimchi to rice was pretty good.
I also had the pork cutlet with curry. The curry was bland and lacked flavour but the pork cutlet was surprisingly crispy. The sauce did nothing but make the cutlet soggy. The inside of the pork cutlet was not too dry but not insanely juicy either. Without the sauce there would be no salt flavour at all. The amount of rice for 2 cutlets is definitely not enough.
Finally, we also had the hamburger steak with gravy sauce on top and this was surprisingly good. The hamburger was not dried out but very tender and fall apart. The sauce I didn’t enjoy so much but the patty was good. I wish they had gotten a nice crust to add a crunchy component to the dish.
The side dishes on each of these plates was the same: corn and a salad. The salad was doused in some kind of mayonnaise + thousand island sauce which I thought was not bad, definitely not healthy, but not bad. I liked the crispness and thinness of the cabbage accompanied with the creaminess of the sauce.
Overall: This place is definitely cheap and the portions are pretty big. We couldn’t finish it and had to pack it up. The flavour is mediocre and needs improvement but if your only looking for a filling meal then this is the place for you. Overall Rating: 7/10
