I was really craving Shanghai dumplings so we headed to Serendipity to try them out. We were really excited since I’ve never had theirs and we had a 10% off VIP card plus a free dumpling card as well.
The service was lacking but that might have been just because we were seated behind the door within a room so they couldn’t see us.
First up, the fried you tiao – this was quiet chewy and definitely not the light type. Apparently this is more Shanghai style. It’s very crunchy and slightly heavier than other places. Not too oily and slightly addictive. 7/10
We also had the drunken chicken which at first tasted like alcohol but when you got into the meat, it tasted quiet bland. It wasn’t marinated for long enough and lacked savouriness. But the actual texture of the chicken was extremely tender and silky soft. 7/10
The xiao long bao was not bad. The skin was a little too thin or maybe just not strong enough because they broke very easily. There was A LOT of soup inside these dumplings. The meat itself was not very fresh. It was very hard and chewy. 6.5/10
Finally the pork chop and rice cake – this was definitely my favourite dish of the day. It was savoury yet sweet. But it was a little too oily. The rice cake was really REALLY chewy which I thoroughly enjoyed. The pork was also very tender and the flavours penetrated right to the bone. 8/10
Overall: I thought the food at Serendipity were really not bad. The flavours were generally there and the textures were mostly good. The service might not be the best, but the pork chop rice cake makes up for everything. 7/10
