Comfort food at Cafe de l’Orangerie

I was looking for somewhere to have lunch in the Marpole area and after must deliberation of whether we should eat Japanese, Chinese, West coast food and in the end we settled on a fusion of Japanese and Italian at Café de l’orangerie.

There were so many things we wanted to order on the menu. Keep in mind this was not our first visit at Café de L’orangerie but we still wanted to order everything. We’ve had their pasta and rice before, so I wanted to go for something special. I found their baked hamburger rice topped with cheese on the menu. We also ordered their curry fries and a cheeky green tea parfait to end the lunch.

The baked hamburger rice topped with cheese was pretty good. The salad on the side contained mayo and a little sauce on the bottom making it rich yet still somewhat refreshing. The baked hamburger rice was pretty good. The rice itself was creamy and the sauce covering the rice added sweetness and savouriness to the dish. The hamburger and cheese was definitely the highlight of this dish. The hamburger was soft yet meaty, my only complaint was that the hamburger could have been fried crunchier on the top (fried on each side). The cheese was just the most beautiful ending. It was rich and addicting.

The curry fries were pretty good as well. The fries were nice and crunchy. The curry on top perfectly coated each fry. It didn’t make it too soggy or too heavy. The cheese curds on top added a nice squeak and savouriness to it. The balance of salty and sweet was addicting. I just wish that there were more cheese curds.

For dessert, we had the green tea parfait. The bottom consisted of green tea pudding and it was topped with mochi, red bean and vanilla ice cream. The green tea pudding was nice and strong and went well with all the topping. The mochi was especially chewy and delicious. My only complaint was that there just wasn’t enough.
